Dear Members & Friends,
Compliments of the season to one and all!
Gosh, how quickly the year has passed. I guess it has something to do with the influence of geopolitical tensions that we have been experiencing throughout the year and the volatility we have witnessed in the capital markets. For some IROs, they are probably hoping for calmer conditions to prevail in 2020, following the dovish interest rates environment by central banks and the soon to be concluded phase one signing of the USA – China trade dispute.
IRPAS had a fairly busy 2019. We started the calendar year with a seminar by Black Sun Singapore, one of our corporate supporting members, on the subject “Using technology to increase the ROI of Annual Reports” in February. This was followed by the inaugural Fireside Chat with CEOs Series, featuring Alex Hungate, President & CEO of SATS.
One notable highlight of the year was the All-Asia Executive Team ASEAN Most Honored Company Awards which IRPAS co-hosted with Institutional Investor and supported by SGX. We had representatives of the Most Honoured Company from the five ASEAN countries in attendance.
Another interesting talk took place in November, delivered by head-hunters, Katrina and Oscar who are based in Hong Kong and London respectively. The topic “IR – Now & Tomorrow” was insightful and engaging.
We ended the year as a sponsor of the IR Magazine SEA Awards held at the SGX Auditorium on 3 December 2019. Our heartiest congratulations to our members who were nominated and the eventual winners.
Our congratulations also go out to the successful candidates who passed the ICIR examinations this year. Since 2013, IRPAS has been administrating these examinations on behalf of the IR Society UK. The ICIR certification is widely recognised in the UK and Europe. Successful certified candidates have earned the right to use the “ICIR” acronym on their name cards.
IRPAS closed its membership count in 2019 with 85 members comprising 209 corporate nominees and individual members. Our secretariat has already commenced the membership renewal process and currently, we are offering a 10% discount for a 3-year term for new applicants or renewals.
We are delighted to welcome the admission of four new corporate supporting members: Smartkarma, Tangelo, IR Magazine and Hong Bao Media. IRPAS look forward to collaborations with them to deliver value-add solutions and professional development modules to our members in the new year. Please look out for these in the event calendar of our website: www.irpas.com.
I had the honour of being invited by the Taiwan IR Institute (TIRI) to their 2019 Annual Conference and Gala Dinner in Taipei this month. Even though TIRI is barely 2-years old, their conference was well attended by many IROs of Taiwan listed companies, local media and senior representatives of the Taiwan Stock Exchange and Taipei Stock Exchange. During the panel discussion, I shared the evolution of IRPAS and IR best practices with the audience. The enthusiasm and bonding I witnessed at the event were inspiring.
Which leads me to my personal New Year wish – that IROs in Singapore be as passionate in their profession and all come together to foster a closer community of like-minded practitioners who adopt best practices to raise the standing of the IRO within our financial community. We look forward to your coming participations in our organised events in 2020.
Let me conclude by wishing you and your loved Happy Christmas and Good Tidings for the New Year!
Mr. Harold Woo
